Over 6,000 Graduates Embark on a New Chapter at NCKU’s 114th Commencement Ceremony

On June 7, 2025, NCKU held its 114th Commencement Ceremony, celebrating the graduation of over 6,000 students. In his keynote speech, President Meng-Ru Shen urged graduates to stay true to the university’s spirit—“In Pursuit of Truth, In Service of Humanity through Science” (窮理致知，科學濟世). He encouraged graduates to think independently, uphold core values, and remember that success lies not in personal glory but in contributing to society—a legacy that has defined NCKU for nearly a century.

Words from a Senior

Alumnus Dr. Ho-Cheng Lee, Chairman of DiCon Fiberoptics Inc. and a 1979 graduate of Mechanical Engineering, shared reflections on his own graduation and career journey. He encouraged students to pursue ambitious goals, take the first step with courage, and carry NCKU’s spirit of kindness and people-centered values into the world.

Student speakers Hsing-Hui Liu and Li-Yu Hsieh from Materials Science delivered a heartfelt dialogue titled “Ordinariness." They used humor to reflect on student life and remind peers that every journey holds meaning and courage, no matter how ordinary. Jyun-Wei Yang from Hydraulic Engineering followed with a tribute to parents and teachers, using a fridge as a metaphor for preserving memories. He encouraged graduates to carry NCKU’s spirit with them as they progress.

At the farewell banquet following the commencement, President Meng-Ru Shen joined graduates for a heartfelt send-off. Though no alcohol was served at the event, he warmly reminded students to celebrate safely and gave them a cheerful pledge: “No drinking tonight, and if you do, get a designated driver!” He then added with flair, “I’ll pay for your ride home!” President Shen’s heartfelt gesture drew cheers and left a lasting impression. Covering the cost of students’ rides home was just one way President Shen expressed his ongoing care and sincere wishes for their safety, reminding graduates that NCKU will always be their home.
